5x things to see in Doha, Qatar

29 Outubro 2016

The face-to-face program of Global Shapers: Generation 2016 will take place in Doha, Qatar. Some of the Global Shapers are arriving early in Qatar and would like to do some sightseeing. One of our alumni Global Shapers, Freek Matheij, moved to Qatar last year and has some great tips. Here are 5x things you should visit in Doha, Qatar!

1. Museum of Islamic Art / MIA Park

The Museum of Islamic Art is a project of Arcadis and houses an important collection of artifacts illustrating the development of Islam and the evolution of the Arab culture from various geographic regions.

Next to the museum is the MIA Park, where you can walk around and gaze at the Doha skyline. This is a great point for Doha skyline pictures!

2. Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif is a market area where you can shop, eat or explore the local culture of Qatar. The historical location has been inhabited by nomads for centuries, but started to run down over the years. In 2004, it was decided to renovate and restore the entire market area according to traditional Qatari architectural techniques. A must see if you want to experience the Qatari culture and buy some souvenirs for home.

3. Katara Cultural Village

Katara Cultural Village is the largest and the most multidimensional cultural project of Qatar. It is a place where people come together to experience the cultures of the world. With beautiful theatres, concert halls, exhibition galleries and cutting-edge facilities, Katara aims to become a world leader for multi-cultural activities. (source: www.katara.net.)

4. State Grand Mosque

The state Mosque Qatar is one of the largest mosques in Qatar and located in the Jubailat district of Doha, high on a hill overlooking the Qatar Sports Club in Doha’s West Bay. The beautiful mosque preserves some of the traditional Islamic architectural elements and is a well-known landmark construction in Doha.

5. Malls

If you want to do some shopping in Qatar, you will find plenty of malls. Think of the Gate Mall, Mall of Qatar, Laguna Mall, Gulf Mall or the Alhazm Mall.

If the list above is not enough: you could also go rock climbing in Zekreet (Doha West) near Dukhan. There are a number of rock formations, of which the highest is around 15 meters. Don’t forget to keep health & safety in mind! The Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack is also worth a visit or if you want to cool down, visit the Aqua Park Qatar.

We look forward to welcoming you in Qatar. Safe travels!
