Impact Story – Freek Matheij

A seasoned Arcadian for over 12 years, Freek Matheij shares some highlights from his participation with Lovinklaan programs. Currently, he holds the position of Global Citizen Development Platforms Director and leads the adoption of low-code/no-code (LCNC) and AI/ML platforms at Arcadis, New York. Having participated in some of our programs, such as Quest, Global Shapers, and Expedition DNA, Freek is no stranger to Lovinklaan-sponsored programs that have helped him explore his passion for technology in revolutionising the AEC industry.

Freek says his various hands-on experiences through Lovinklaan have inspired him to expand his avenues for exploration. He has gained valuable experience in digital transformation and networking that has bolstered his confidence when undertaking new projects. His acquired knowledge has helped him lead diverse teams in his field. Looking back at his past experiences, Freek says one of his favourite moments was organising the Arcadis Leadership Program of our former Lovinklaan program, Global Shapers, in 2015, which he believes was a life-changing experience. It offered him the opportunity to relocate from his home country, the Netherlands, first to Qatar, and then to the USA. Each move widened his cultural scope and further broadened his worldview.

Freek says he has been positively influenced by the support provided by Lovinklaan and the foundation’s commitment to empowering Arcadians. “There is a reason I have stayed with Arcadis for 12 years, a trait unique to my generation; it is the investment in my career and my loyalty to the company to make it better for the future,” shares Freek.

“The Lovinklaan programs motivate my daily commitment to excellence and effectiveness, encouraging me to share these values with others in the company. Through this, we build a network that grows together and shares knowledge. For instance, many alumni members of the former Global Shapers program are now in managerial positions, demonstrating the career growth facilitated by these programs. Being Dutch myself, I feel extra proud as I contribute to this while working abroad”, he adds.

It is for these reasons that Freek advises other employees to take full advantage of these programs to expand their skills and opportunities. Being open to continuous learning is key to personal success as well as to the success of the overall business, he says.

“The programs prepare Arcadians for the future. Their impact extends beyond individual achievements; by developing employees, the programs uplift teams, departments, performance, and culture across Arcadis. We gain collaborative spirit and leadership principles that benefit the whole community.”

In closing, Freek emphasises the importance of upskilling people from a digital and artificial intelligence perspective. Because the reality is that technology is moving very fast, and we need to keep up with it.

As the Lovinklaan Foundation, we agree wholeheartedly.
