Blog – A wonderful exchange experience in Doha

04 augustus 2017

Quest is an international transfer program which connects Arcadians from all over the world. Quest is sponsored by the Lovinklaan Foundation. Every week we are highlighting one of the stories our employees who went on an exchange. In this blogpost we cover the Quest story of Yashwanth Kumar S who traveled from Bengaluru, India to Doha, Qatar.

Why did I apply for a Quest

In GEC Bengaluru we design wet utilities like Foul Sewer and Treated Sewage Effluent network and deliver it to our lead office in Doha. The Quest enabled me to interact with our lead office CAD manager, CAD team and the design team, to understand the new working procedures and get acquainted with client requirements. Additionally, I applied for Quest because gives me the opportunity to visit construction site and better understand site issues that have an impact on design, the role of Arcadis towards coordinating with client & contractors, the construction complexity with multiple utilities at ground, as well as the advanced technology used in construction methods. These insights are very useful when preparing drawings and designing utilities in our local office.

“The Quest enabled me to interact with colleagues abroad and learn an extensive amount from the site visit!”

Highlight of my quest experience

It was interesting to have the opportunity to interact face-to-face with our lead office counterpart, and visit most of the construction sites. These visits gave me a better understanding of the safety culture in our work, understand the ground conditions on which we are presently working and various other aspects of Civil/Environmental Engineering. Along with this we got an opportunity to visit “Kahrama Mega reservoir” – One of the biggest reservoir in the world, designed by Arcadis, GEC, Bengaluru and Pumping Station “PS70” – One of the deepest foul water pumping station in the world.

My Quest in one word

“A knowledgeable and wonderful experience.”

Learnings and experiences

The Quest was a great experience,  getting to know our counterpart design team in lead office will foster the relationship and allows us to work more effectively in the future. I got a better understanding of cultural differences and will be able to coordinate cross-boarder projects in a more efficient manner. We discussed standard working procedures to optimize the workflow to avoid complications in an earlier design stage. Also it was very fruitful to share our experiences about Designed Drawings and data’s and learnings with our CAD team and Design team to enhance their knowledge and give them a better view of the site oriented design.
